Optimal Deployment of FACTS Devices

Voltage collapse of power systems tents to be caused by lack of enough reactive power induced from heavy loads. The practical trigger of it is usually a power system outage and the volrage collapse problem is closely related to reactive power planning problem with considering outage analysis. In order to keep high reliability of the power systems, voltage control is very important.

In this study, a new reactive power planning problem including SVCs (Deployment problem of SVCs) is formulated and its solution method is also proposed. Voltage stability factors are integrated to the cost function of the problem rather than treating them as constraints and this formulation aims to coordinate the investment and system reliability. In other words, the goal of this study is to minimize the installation cost of SVCs and the operatin cost of whole power systems.
